About Podcasting

How do I get the Good Dirt Radio Podcast?
If you have iTunes 4.9 installed, subscribing to Good Dirt Radio's Podcast is as simple as searching for "Good Dirt Radio" in the iTunes Music Store and clicking the "subscribe" button. Or, follow this link to subscribe in iTunes. If you use another program, you might need to subscribe by pasting in this url: http://www.gooddirtradio.org/podcast/gdr.php.

What software do I need to get podcasts?
The latest iTunes release now integrates podcasting into the program. It's the easiest way to view, choose, subscribe, listen to podcasts, and sync to your iPod. We also recommend juice for Windows/Mac/Linux. It interfaces with iTunes; ipodder also works with other jukebox software like MusicMatch or Windows Media Player. Both MusicMatch and Windows MediaPlayer work with a variety of MP3 players.

Once you download and install the podcasting software, follow the instructions to subscribe to audio content.

What is Podcasting?
Podcast is an outgrowth of the RSS newsfeeds that you might already be familiar with. To access them, you download newsreader software and subscribe to RSS content, such as news, weather reports and weblogs. This content is then delivered automatically to your desktop.

Podcasting works using the same basic technology, but the content delivered by podcast software is audio, and you can listen to it on your computer, or a portable MP3 player. You can subscribe to all kinds of audio content, including radio shows, using the free software. That software checks automatically for updated audio content, downloads it, and transfers it to your iPod or other player.

What’s so cool about Podcasts?
Probably the biggest benefit is that you can subscribe to some of your favorite radio programs and have them delivered automatically to your MP3 player. You can listen on the go, at your convenience. You don’t miss your favorite shows ever. Public broadcasters like NPR, PRI, APM, BBC, CBC, and Good Dirt Radio now offer podcasts… with more to come.

Don't have an MP3 player?
You don't need one. You can "click" manually and listen now to this week's Environment Report. Or, use iTunes or podcasting software to subscribe and have new issues of Good Dirt Radio downloaded to your PC and then play them on your computer.

How do I find other public radio podcasts?
Here are some good sources for a wide variety of podcasts:

iTunes Music Store
Podcast.com
Ipodder.org
Odeo.com

About RSS

What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It’s a method of delivering content from websites directly to software on your computer. The content can be headlines, articles, summaries and links, and even audio (podcasting).

Why should I use RSS?
RSS is a great way to check out new content on a number of websites without having to go to each website. Your RSS reader will automatically gather all the new content on each site you’ve subscribed to, and display it for you.

What software do I need to use RSS?
You need a newsreader or an aggregator that will display the RSS content feeds from the sites you subscribe to. There are many different readers available, and most are free.

NPR recommends the following software, listed in alphabetical order:

Amphetadesk – Windows, Mac, Linux (open source); freeware
Awasu – Windows; free for personal use
Bloglines – Web-based news aggregator; free
FeedDemon – Windows; commercial software, trial available
Feedreader – Windows (open source); freeware
My Yahoo! – Web-based news aggregator; free
NetNewsWire – Mac OS X; commercial software, trial available
NewsFire – Mac OS X; freeware
Rocket RSS Reader – Web-based RSS reader; free
RSS Reader – Windows; freeware

Some browsers can read RSS content. Firefox users can download a reader called Sage at Mozilla Update.

Once you download and install the software, you can follow the program’s instructions to subscribe to RSS feeds.
